Hike Offa's Dyke Path, is one of Wales's long distance walking trails, from Wales' North coast at Prestatyn to the mouth of the River Wye and the Severn estuary at Chepstow, via Llangollen , River Dee, Knighton, Hay-on-Wye, Llanthony Abbey and Chepstow.
The Offa's Dyke Path is a 177 mile way-marked long-distance walking trail. This hiking tour can be walked in either direction.
This Welsh self guided walking holiday hikes through some of the highlights of Wales and is a great introduction to walking holidays in Wales and the UK. The Offa's Dyke Path passes through some of Wales's most spectacular landscapes full of wildlife and heritage.
The Offa's Dyke walking trail is clearly way-marked to provide reassurance on your walking holiday in Wales.
The walking trail officially opened in 1971 but this long-distance hiking path follows an earthwork of much greater antiquity. Built by King Offa of Mercia in the 8th century, Offa's Dyke formed the ancient frontier between England and Wales. There are no border skirmishes these days, but you'll find miles of quiet, uninterrupted Welsh countryside, stunning mountain ranges and a plethora of wildlife. Suggested Tour Duration:

You'll encounter the Severn and Wye Rivers as the walking path winds southwards from Denbighshire to Monmouthshire. Cultural heritage sites are in abundance, from the Palaeolithic Pontnewydd Cave, home to Wales' earliest known settlers, to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct from the Industrial Age. This is a strenuous walking holiday, so we have carefully selected comfortable accommodation to ensure you are well rested each night!
Day 1: Arrive at Prestatyn
To start your walking holiday on Offa's Dyke Path walking trail you make your own way to Prestatyn. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided walking holiday in Wales.

Day 2: Prestatyn to Sodom.    11 miles
Leaving Liverpool Bay and the coast, the walking route heads inland through Denbighshire. This first day of walking includes a bracing hike onto "Bryn Prestatyn", from where you are treated to panoramic views across to Snowdonia, the North coast of Wales and the Clwydian Hills ahead.
Day 3: Sodom to Clwyd Gate.    13 miles
A more challenging hiking day today as you cross the Welsh Clwydian Hills. There is ample recompense in the form of wonderful views and a number of Iron Age hill-forts to explore. The bilberry and heather-clad slopes harbour plenty of birdlife and provide a springy surface for the walker, which makes the walking easier.

Llangollen on walking holiday on Offa's Dyke Path
Day 4: Clwyd Gate to Llangollen.    14 miles   
Walking down from the hills of North Wales and through the conifer forests to Llangollen. Don't miss Plas Newydd, a beautiful black-and-white timbered building at the heart of this charming town, once home to the "Ladies of Llangollen". Llangollen has much to offer the visitor; its famous canal, steam railway and beautiful river. A great place to take a rest day a sample Welsh life.
Day 5: Llangollen to Craig Nant.    11 miles   
Walking on from Llangollen, craggy limestone cliffs replace the gentle hills on today's hike, as the walking path heads south past Dinas Bran Castle and on to a highlight of Offa's Dyke - the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. A thousand feet in length and 126 feet above the River Dee, this is one section of this walking holiday in Wales you will not forget!

Day 6: Craig Nant to Llanymynech.    11 miles   
Walking on from Craig Nant, Chirk Castle makes a worthwhile detour today. A 700-year old fortress surrounded by a medieval hunting park, you can enjoy views over Wales and England from the roof.
Day 7: Llanymynech to Buttington.    10 miles   
The hiking trail now crossed a flat plain and follows the Tir-y-Mynach Embankment for several miles, making for easy walking and good views as you walk southwards to the Welsh town of Welshpool.

Day 8: Buttington to Brompton Crossroads.    12 miles   
Leaving the River Severn, there is a stiff hike to the Beacon Ring Hill Fort before the gradient eases as you walk cross the Plain of Montgomery.
Day 9: Brompton Crossroads to Knighton.    15 miles   
Walking across the ancient drovers' road, the Kerry Ridgeway , which has survived almost intact for centuries in this unspoilt corner of the Welsh Marches. The Offa's Dyke Path walking trail hikes through pretty villages, before an exhilarating hike onto Llanfair Hill. The Offa's Dyke itself is well-preserved on this airy section of the walking path, which leads down to Knighton, the "Town on the Dyke".

Day 10: Knighton to Kington.    14 miles   
Spectacular views and lovely walking across springy turf as you hike through the Welsh county of Powys. A stiff hike up Hawthorn Hill gives you a good excuse to pause to watch the once-endangered Red Kite, a striking bird of prey which has become an emblem of Mid Wales. There's a thriving craft tradition in Mid Wales too, with many artists deriving their inspiration from the landscape of Wales.

Day 11: Kington to Hay-on-Wye.    15 miles   
More great hiking country as the walking route heads down to the Wye Valley through an area of conifer woods known as Bettws Dingle. End the day by sampling the delights of Hay-on-Wye, the world-famous book town. If book-browsing is not your thing, there is wonderful local food and drink on offer in the town's pubs, tea shops and restaurants. In Hay you can connect to the Wye Valley Walk.

Day 12: Hay-on-Wye to Longtown/Llanthony.    12 miles 
A strenuous but very scenic walking day through the Black Mountains of Wales , beginning with a hike up to Hay Bluff beside the Gospel Pass - Wales' highest motorable road. Easy walking along the ridge follows, with wonderful views of the Wye Valley and the ruins of 11th century Llanthony Priory, deep in the quiet Vale of Ewyas.

Day 13: Longtown/Llanthony to Llanvetherine.    10 miles   
Easier walking as you leave Powys and hike through the gentler landscapes of Monmouthshire, walking north of Abergavenny through an area of Wales rich in castles and quaint villages.

Day 14: Llanvetherine to Redbrook.    15 miles   
Walking through the heart of the Wye Valley an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) with spectacular craggy limestone cliffs and dense woodland. A good chance to spot birdlife and otters at the water's edge as you hike through this peaceful part of Wales.
Day 15: Redbrook to Chepstow.    15 miles   
The walking route passes right by Tintern Abbey, where you can visit the monastic ruins before continuing on to Chepstow with its fine 11th century castle.

Day 16: Depart after breakfast
